The beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula in the Southern Vales region amongst the vineyards. in South Australia offers some of the best cycling in Australia and it is alive with spectators and the world’s best cyclists each year during the Tour Down Under. This excitement and atmosphere will be replicated by our junior cyclists during the Wirtgen Group – SCC Centrals Junior Tour.

The South Coast Cycling president, David Schutz said: “It is fantastic that we are able to have the Wirtgen Group as our principal sponsor again this year for our joint SCC/Central club’s Junior Tour. The support of the Wirtgen Group over the last few years has ensured the ongoing running of the event.

Wirtgen Australia is a member of the Wirtgen Group, a John Deere company, and provider of construction equipment to road, mining and civil construction industries. Wirtgen Group provide equipment under the WIRTGEN, VÖGELE, HAMM, KLEEMANN, BENNINGHOVEN and CIBER brands. As the technological leader Wirtgen Group offer their customers solutions for road construction and repair, for mining and processing minerals, as well as for recycling construction  and pavement materials.

Stuart Torpy, Managing Director says ”Wirtgen Australia are very pleased to be involved with the Centrals Junior Tour on 2022. Engagement with a sporting event which is focused on both team outcomes and individual performance is close to our hearts. Importantly though, this event is about contributing to the competitive spirit amongst the future of Australian sporting legends. People may not always recognise the Wirtgen name, but there’s a better than even chance that you’ve ridden or driven on a road that was made using Wirtgen Group equipment. I hope it’s another great tour in 2022.”

The tour will be based in the Southern Vales region amongst McLaren Vales Vineyards, the district has fantastic facilities and plenty for the supporting families to do before and after the racing. The courses are all new to previous events with new challenges, but most importantly they remain on the low traffic areas of the State for the conducting of a safe event.

This event, in its 53rd year, has a strong history of seeing junior cyclists competing at the highest level in conditions and courses similar to that of the Elite World Tour cyclists. This year has been modelled to give all the juniors a chance to shine with a Road stage, Time trial, another Road Stage and a Hill Climb for each U17 & 15 age and gender groups, U13 will compete on Day 1 only doing the Road & Time trial.

This Junior Tour has been a stepping stone for many cyclists who have progressed to represent Australia at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and  World Championships. Some have joined an UCI World Tour Team and raced in The Tour de France. These riders form an impressive list of champions and include Alexandra Manly, Annette Edmondson, Alex Edmondson, Miles Scotson, Josh Harrison, Brett Aitken, Stuart O’Grady and Callum Scotson to name a few.

The 2022 Tour includes the hill climb stage up Willunga Hill, which is a popular hill climb for cyclists and has been a regular KOM stage for UCI World Tour competitors in the Tour Down Under. This stage is a great spectacle for cycling enthusiasts to come out to Willunga and see our young cyclists competing. The under 17 Males traditionally have strong fields and it should be exciting to see who prevails, on the legendary Willunga Hill that one Richie Porte has made his own in the Tour Down Under.
